It's is a beautiful and soulful expression of his West African roots. The album consists of ten tracks, with each one showcasing Djabaté's mastery of the kora, an ancient African harp, and the balafón, the African xylophone. Meaning “children” in Mandinga, Dindin meditates on the social and political situation in Africa, treating difficult themes such as religion, women’s rights, poverty and education with sensitivity and nuance.

The opening track, "Afonhe," immediately sets the tone for the album with its catchy rhythm and uplifting message about the difficulties some people have with being honest.“Nowadays people have some troubles with telling the truth, to have clarity in their communication,” explains Djabaté. “Because love also means trusting the other. If there is no truth things will get complicated later.”

The next track, “Yensoro” is a song about giving a relationship a chance to grow before calling it off. “We had a chance / To be happy / But you didn’t wait / You had me in your hands / I had you in mine / But you didn’t wait.” It is backed by interlocking balafón and guitar lines with a soulful accordion riff.

With its striking electric rock guitar riffs, “Alidonke” is one of the highlights of the album. With hints of Tuareg desert blues, and a driving, irresistible beat, Kimi sings joyfully of love. “Smile at me / My love / Speak to me / Give me your hand / It’s you that I want / The love of my life arrived / My friend has arrived.”

Overall, "Dindin" is an outstanding album that showcases Kimi Djabaté's exceptional talent as a musician and his ability to blend Afro-Portuguese rhythms with Afrobeat grooves, electric desert blues and hints of Cuban swing, Djabaté weaves a unique tapestry of smooth, funky and intricate sounds. Djabaté's vocals are emotive and powerful, and the album's messages of love, unity, and human connection are both timely and universal.
The program will feature music by the artists that made my 2022 so special with appearances in my show and live performances in the Bay Area! It's going to be a fun hour as we reflect on how each artist made us feel!

I remember being blown away by Venezuela's Nella at the Bing Studio. No wonder she is Latin Grammy winner! How about the crazy and fun time with Ozomatli at the Guild Theater? Brazil's Marisa Monte showered us with memories as she played music from her classic repertoire and the long-waited new album, Portas. Small Island Big Song beautiful performance at Bing Auditorium reminded us how important it is to take care of our planet and to preserve our culture. Pink Martini's night under the stars with the symphony at Frost Amphitheater was unforgettable! The show ended with their fabulous interpretation of the song "Brazil." There wasn't one person still in that crowd! How about Lila Downs? OMG! What an honor to interview this amazing woman/artist/activist who has blessed the world with her captivating voice! She can inspire our senses singing about mole and mezcal and we are right there, dancing next to her like there is no tomorrow!

Earlier in the year, Brazil's Monobloco had everybody feeling like Rio's Carnaval had just arrived in San Francisco in July! I never thought I would say this, but they played longer than my dance endurance! How about Bomba Estereo? More than two hours of music under the bright night sky in Berkeley prior to performing at the Latin Grammys. They were nominated for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music and Best Alternative Song. They are winners in my book!

For the third consecutive year, Michael Franti is my most played artist according to Spotify's Wrapped! As such, my year would not be complete without a live Franti performance! In 2022, he came back to one of my most recommended music venues, the Mountain Winery in Saratoga! It is always one of the most uplifting shows. The man is like Bob Marley - it's impossible not to want to be a better person when you experience the Franti music boost!

Aloha! Hawaii came to Stanford! Thanks to Stanford Live, we had the Holo Holo Festival with the headliner, Kolohe Kai!

Finally, we got to hear Sergio Mendes who had everybody dancing to "Mais Que Nada" at the fabulous venue, Yoshi's in Oakland. Some of our listeners got to attend the sold out show and guess what? We met the legend!

To close out the season, we welcomed Okaidja Afroso to the Bing Auditorium to hear Jaku Humor, a well-grounded story of the beautiful and ancient fishing culture of the coastal Gãdangmé natives of Ghana. His angelic voice will uplift your spirit with the song, Luna.

Global Ginga is grateful for the opportunity to serve the Bay Area community and the world with expertly curated playlists featuring contemporary and traditional world fusion and everything in between from African beats to Latin grooves! Every Friday, at 6 pm, we transport you to faraway lands through the magic of world music. Tune in via live stream online for a fresh dose of global sounds, culture, chats and ticket giveaways! It's his version of Lua Soberana (an Ivan Lins & Victor Martins composition), that opens our show every Friday at 6 pm. I bring this song with me since my days at CMU's WRCT with Cantinho Brasileiro no Radio. I tried to use different songs for my intro at Global Ginga and at the end, Lua Soberana trumped all my other intro attempts. I just love this version by Mendes. It fits perfectly for my vision and I have been listening to this song, weekly, for over 20 years!

Mendes is also special because in my radio career than spans over two decades, over and over I hear of how people became attached to Brazilian music because they, or their parents, used to play Brazil 66, an iconic album that certainly put Brazilian music on the radar of Americans everywhere. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011. Referring to the song "Mas que Nada," Mendes said in 2014: "It was the first time that a song in Portuguese was a hit in America and all over the world".

It's only proper that we announce this event to the community and invite fans of Brazilian music to enjoy a rare live performance by Sergio Mendes this weekend in Oakland! Please visit Yoshi's website for further information and to purchase tickets: https://yoshis.com/

Distinctive, upbeat musical styles grounded in the ecological knowledge of Ghana’s indigenous Ga-Dangme fishermen, including their connections with the oceans. That is what Global Ginga brings on its one-hour special this week. Please tune in and welcome Ghana-born and now Portland-based musician, Okaidja Afroso, to KZSU 90.1 FM, Stanford!

Okaidja Afroso is a Ghanaian singer, dancer, guitarist and composer based in Oregon since 1999, but still deeply tied to his Gãdangmé roots in a fishing community of coastal Ghana. Okaidja recently released his sixth album, Jàkú Mũmɔ – which means “ancestral spirit" in the Gãdangmé language. It is a rich tapestry of acoustic sound, blending palm wine guitar, beach-side fishermen’s songs with layered percussion and call-and-response vocals and a keen pop sensibility. Tuneful, fresh and grooving, the release is a unique entry in the canon of contemporary West African roots music, says Afropop Worldwide.

The Jaku Mumor outreach will pay respect to the wise ways of Okaidja’s elders and
ancestors and their reverence for and connection to the natural world. The program centers around the elements of nature and the wisdom of the elders that is communicated through music, dance, and storytelling.

Since 2015, Stromae has been busy. He launched five clothing collections and collaborated on videos for Yael Naïm (Coward), Dua Lipa (IDGAF) and Billie Eilish (Hostage) under the Mosaert label. He created the label in 2009, together with Luc Van Haver and stylist Coralie Barbier for artistic creation. It operates in the fields of fashion, audiovisual media and, of course, music. When his Brussels studio was completed in 2018, his life changed pace to that of a craftsman returning to his workshop for a third album, Multitude.

You don’t need to dig deep into descriptions of suffering to recognize the paradoxical fruitfulness of certain negative experiences. Multitude comes after a period during which Stromae’s body slowed down drastically, forcing him to take a hiatus from the stage. With it came enforced furlough and its silver linings: settling down, leading a more relaxed, structured life, closer to family, making work exciting again, expanding his sources of inspiration and, most of all, making what he went through worth it by reinvesting the dividends of this challenging phase into the core of new songs. Far from any self-centered self-pity, Stromae took advantage of this time in his life to identify more closely with others, putting himself in the shoes of characters he feels sympathy for (in the etymological meaning “suffering with”). By doing so, he gives the title Multitude a deep resonance, the same one that Walt Whitman conveys in his poem, of which Stromae could take up the opening: “I am large, I contain multitudes, I am of every hue and caste, of every rank and religion.”

With a Rwandan father that he did not see often and a Flemish mother who single-handedly ran a household of six, Stromae was born Paul Van Haver in 1985 in Brussels. He grew up with this sometimes blurry and chaotic double identity, a relationship to himself and others that he learned to soothe through music. An innate alchemist of opposites, he found the magic formula for mixing rap, afrobeat and francophone lyrics without offending the tradition tied to one or corrupting the dance DNA that the others share. We know what came next. The albums Cheese (2010) and Racine Carrée (2013) spearheaded by the titles Alors On Danse, Papaoutai and Formidable exceeded all expectations, filled concert venues and took over dancefloors: 4 million albums were sold (including 3.5 million physical sales). Stromae received countless awards, including four Victoires de la Musique, four NRJ Awards, one MTV Award, and achieved historical feats like filling the prestigious Madison Square Garden in New York. To date, his discography has about 6.5 billion streams worldwide. A multitude, not far off from the number of people making up humanity, which is concealing another type of multitude…

Among his childhood memories, the ones that he particularly cherishes are family travels to far-away countries. Mali, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina… his mother had a pronounced taste for otherness, going so far as to drag her children along with her backpacking off beaten paths and tourist routes. We had previously caught a glimpse of Stromae’s taste for sounds which he seemed to have become sensitive to on the road, such as the cavaquinho in Avé Cesaria. Multitude is Stromae’s other way of exploring the world, while staying firmly attached to his roots.
Global Gingatag:globalginga.com,2005:Post/70690202022-09-26T12:16:51-07:002022-09-26T12:16:51-07:00BOMBA ESTÉREO - Deja World Tour
Global Ginga is excited to announce that one of our favorite bands, Bomba Estéreo, is making a stop in the Bay Area during their Deja World Tour!
Céu is considered one of the most influential Brazilian artists of her generation.

Céu released her self-titled album in 2007 and was one of the few Brazilian artists to be nominated for a Grammy in the World Music category. Her first album reached number one on Billboard's "Heatseeker" and "World Music" charts, and number 57 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the highest U.S. chart position ever achieved by a Brazilian artist since Astrud Gilberto with "Girl From Ipanema" in 1963.

With 5 albums released, Céu has been nominated eight times and has won three Latin Grammys with her albums Tropix (2017) and Apka! (2020). Céu's music has spread around the world. She has performed in 5 continents at some of the most prestigious festivals, such as Montreal Jazz Festival (CA), North Sea Jazz (NL), Coachella (USA), Roskilde (DK), Rock in Rio (BRA), and Lollapalooza (BRA).
World renowned and multi-Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Bebel Gilberto has been enchanting fans and critics worldwide since her solo debut release in 1986. She catapulted onto the global music scene with a track on the celebrated compilation CD, RED HOT + RIO, followed by the worldwide success of her hit breakout album Tanto Tempo in 2000. The album featured her trademark electronic bossa nova, taking over clubs around the world and positioning Bebel as one of the top-selling Brazilian artists in the U.S. since the ’60s.

Critically-acclaimed albums to follow included Bebel Gilberto (2004), on which she refined her sound to create an acoustic lounge style that showcased her strengths as a Brazilian composer, and Momento (Six Degrees 2007), which masterfully showcased her skills at fusing all her musical styles. Bebel’s 2009 Grammy-nominated album All in One (Verve), brought to forefront more of Bebel’s personality and love for organic rhythms.

In 2014, Bebel Gilberto released a beautiful concert DVD called Bebel Gilberto in Rio in Brazil, featuring a superb live concert on the beaches of Rio. Returning to her trademark sultry Brazilian rhythms infused with electronic beats, Bebel followed up with the gorgeous new studio album Tudo, released in August 2015 on Sony to great media acclaim. Her highly anticipated new record Agora produced by Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent) was released by PIAS Recordings 21 Aug 2020.
Global Gingatag:globalginga.com,2005:Post/70163642022-07-16T15:58:53-07:002022-07-16T15:58:53-07:00Starry Nights - three short ballets that range from romantic to athletic to brilliantly cool
Fri, August 5, 2022 at 8:00 pm, Frost Amphitheater

Join us for poetry and passion under the stars as San Francisco Ballet returns to Frost Amphitheater with a program of three short ballets that range from romantic to athletic to brilliantly cool. The many facets of love propel the three couples of Jerome Robbins’ romantic In the Night, set to Frédéric Chopin’s dreamy piano nocturnes. In Helgi Tomasson’s 7 for Eight, 7 movements of four Bach concerti and eight impeccable dancers blend elegance and expressivity, poetry and pyrotechnics. William Forsythe’s Blake Works I, set to the 7 songs of James Blake’s album The Colour in Anything starts with the precision of ballet vocabulary, speeds it up, pushes it to the limit of physicality, then refracts it like a kaleidoscope as 30+ dancers are driven by pop music and joy.
Global Gingatag:globalginga.com,2005:Post/70163622022-07-16T15:50:45-07:002022-07-16T15:50:45-07:00Los Tigres del Norte
Sun, July 31, 2022 at 7:30pm, Frost Amphitheater

Initially formed in 1967, this six-piece Mexican phenomenon band who immigrated from Sinaloa, Mexico to San Jose, have brought the musical genre of norteño to the worldwide stage, and have sold over 37 million records. Boasting several Grammys, Latin Grammys as well as their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, they have become one of the most influential Latin groups of all time.

Over more than 70 albums -- including 22 number ones -- they turned norteño, an accordion-based polka music indigenous to Northern Mexico, into commercially viable pop music, infusing the tradition with boleros, cumbias, rock rhythms, waltzes, and sound effects

Throughout their long and storied career, Los Tigres maintained a respectable image, never glamorizing the drug trade nor any other criminal activity. They refused to be photographed with so much as a gun in sight. This air of respectability helped expand their audience demographically and internationally.

Singer and songwriter Mon Laferte is one of the most revered, respected, and beloved musicians in Chile today. Her music brings together the sonic traditions of her native country and that of Mexico, where she lives, with the maximalist punch of globally minded pop, while her lyrics powerfully address the issues facing women, people of color, and the impoverished in Latin America. Defiantly outspoken, she’s also the winner of four Latin Grammys, including most recently Best Singer Songwriter Album, for her 2021 album Seis. Written in the mountains of Tepoztlán, Mexico, and inspired by both Mexican singer Chavela Vargas—whose songs freely celebrated love between women—and by the 2019 protests against human rights abuses in Chile, the album was also nominated for a 2022 Grammy Award. Her most recent album, 1940 Carmen, released in October 2021, is a snapshot of her time in Los Angeles, during the first semester of that year.

Marisa Monte stormed onto the music scene in her native Brazil in the late 1980’s and has remained center stage ever since. Releasing one wildly successful project after another, Monte is recognized as the greatest Brazilian singer of her generation. Her recordings, which have netted her four Latin Grammy Awards and sold millions of copies worldwide, blend her early love of samba and classic MPB (Brazilian pop) with a deep and wide-ranging mastery of songwriting and arranging which created her own supremely modern and eclectic style.

In addition to her groundbreaking solo albums and her longtime work with the influential super group Tribalistas with Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown, Monte has collaborated with a who’s-who of international artists including Laurie Anderson, Jorge Drexler, Julieta Venegas, David Byrne, Philip Glass, Arto Lindsay, Gilberto Gil, Seu Jorge, Caetano Veloso, Devendra Banhart and John Zorn, to name a few.

Monte’s 2022 U.S. tour celebrates the release of the singer’s newest project Portas (Phonomotor/Sony Music). Recorded across multiple continents during the pandemic, the album is Monte’s first solo release in a decade. Says Monte: “I started my life in music at the age of 19 and I've never been so long without singing live and without meeting my audience. I'm really missing it!”
2:42Global Gingatag:globalginga.com,2005:Post/68022772021-11-08T14:39:19-08:002021-12-29T03:39:16-08:00Art, Music and Brazilian Cuisine on November 13th
Come join us and celebrate a day of Art, Music and Brazilian Cuisine on November 13th from 11AM to 4PM.

We are speaking with Ale Giannini, a 3rd generation tango composer and musician from Buenos Aires and the grandson of famed Argentine tango composer Jose Lanzo.

These days Ale finds himself always composing, always whistling a nameless tune while walking around his native city. Those whistles and wanderings have coalesced on Cross A La Mandibula, a sonic novel that takes you with him through modern day Buenos Aires. This ain't his grandfather's tango- it's a compendium of urban pop/tango songs delivered in a transgenerational style, grouped together in a conceptual album that merges the universes of contemporary urban pop with the imagery of Buenos Aires, its literature and its music.

Last week I attended the Music Tectonics event hosted by special guest Tom Truitt, partner and head of the Entertainment practice at Buffkin / Baker, a leading executive search firm, and Dmitri Vietze, Music Tectonics director and CEO of rock paper scissors, a public relations firm for the music industry. People like Grechen Boster from CD Baby and others presented information about open opportunities and attendees had a chance to network for 5 minutes via a random pick process - very interesting.

One of the most common problems with resumes received by recruiters is that job seekers are not crafting their resumes to align with the position they’re applying for. Also, people are forgetting that 85% of jobs are filled through networking. Although attending events is impossible now due to Covid-19, virtual events are definitely filling the gap. With a surge of platforms and tools to make the events feel as human as possible, several organizations are providing meetings to foster connections.

If you are interested in the music industry, you might want to follow Music Tectonics to network with innovators across the music and tech landscapes: startups, major labels, indie labels, streaming services, distributors, social media platforms, investors, accelerators, legal experts, live event execs, gear makers, consultants, and more.

Tom Truitt, partner and head of the Entertainment practice at Buffkin / Baker, a leading executive search firm, is hosting an event know as WHO KNEW -The Smartest People In The Room which is now on Zoom. This event is now twice a week, Tuesday and Thrusday, and provides an incredible lineup of highly accomplished professionals. Who Knew Nash is becoming so popular that their schedule is booked through December, says Tom. I had a 20 minute conversation with Tom about his observation of the recruiting climate in the music industry and his word of advice is to not be afraid to walk into someone's office with a resume and ask to see the decision maker for a quick chat. It's quite impressive, he says! For more on job searching tips if you are looking to continue your career in the industry or transition to the music industry, we will post the full interview recording on our twitter page as it will broadcast a few times this week on KZSU.

Interview + Music
Céu's APKÁ! continues her journey into electrified space while taking even more time to find moments of softness. Blissful interpretations of late-night dance music styles and high-heat MPB make for a multidimensional release of soulful energy, replete with the effortless sophistication that Céu exudes in every album. Céu has long been an internationally-renowned creative force, as potent in her most easy and straightforward moments as in her most forward-facing and electric. APKÁ! has elements of it all: loud, quiet, sober, and utterly vivacious. But this is hardly a simple recap of her career to date. Every second of APKÁ! is fresh and new, and Céu, 15 years into her global fame, continues to grow and try new things with a trustworthy team and wisdom that shows in how well-informed her creative choices ultimately are. Céu's vision works on a cosmic scale, and I continue to anticipate what could come next eagerly. -- Adriane Pontecorvo

This musical journey resulted in the award-winning documentary, “A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians.”

In 2005, Mark Johnson was walking in Santa Monica, California, when he heard the voice of Roger Ridley singing “Stand By Me.” Roger had so much soul and conviction in his voice, and Mark approached him about performing “Stand By Me” as a Song Around the World. Roger agreed, and when Mark returned with recording equipment and cameras he asked Roger, “With a voice like yours, why are you singing on the streets?” Roger replied, “Man I’m in the Joy business, I come out to be with the people.” Ever since that day the Playing For Change crew has traveled the world recording and filming musicians, creating Songs Around the World, and building a global family.

I first saw Playing for Change in Cleveland in 2009. The mid-sized theater was packed! In 2012. I saw them again in a larger theater in my home town of Pittsburgh, PA. I brought my grown children with me as part of their Christmas gift. We had a lovely time!

Please check the video of my interview with Playing for Change! Reggae is a style of popular music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s and quickly emerged as the country's dominant music. By the 1970s, it had become an international style that was particularly popular in Britain, the United States, and Africa. The city of São Luis do Maranhão in Brazil has emerged as the new hot spot for reggae music outside of Jamaica. The music was, and still is, widely perceived as a voice of the oppressed. When reggae singers weren’t singing about love, they were singing about rebellion and revolution against the forces impeding love - like extreme violence, poverty, racism, and government oppression they were witnessing or experiencing on a regular basis.

Reggae music is a genre that speaks about current struggles on 2020. I hope you enjoy the mix under "past episodes." May Jah love be with you!
Global Gingatag:globalginga.com,2005:Post/63756432020-07-04T00:57:15-07:002021-12-24T02:32:39-08:00Dan Storper, Founder of Putumayo World Music
We had the pleasure of speaking with Dan Storper about the early days of Putumayo and about what he has planned for the future.
